College student tutors: affordable, vetted, local
College Student Tutors in San Diego: what should San Diego readers know?
Plenty of SDSU, UCSD, USD, Point Loma Nazarene and community-college students are strong swimmers, players, musicians or students who'd teach kids for side income. We're building a small matching program for them. It isn't open yet. We're collecting interest from families and students first.
How we plan to vet every student
- Student status: a current student ID plus a school email check.
- Background check: a fingerprint-based California check (TrustLine for in-home tutoring/care, see below) or a commercial check through an FCRA-compliant provider, done with the student's written consent. Renewed yearly.
- Two references: a coach, professor, employer or family they've taught before. We call both.
- Skills proof: e.g. a current Red Cross WSI or lifeguard cert for swim, team roster for sport, transcript/test scores for tutoring.
- Safety training: free abuse-prevention training (for example the U.S. Center for SafeSport's courses) and CPR/First Aid for water and sport.
Safety rules for every session
- Sessions happen in public places (parks, libraries, rec centers) or at home with a parent or guardian present the whole time.
- No one-on-one private messaging with kids. All messages go through or copy a parent.
- No rides, no photos of children without written parent permission.
- Any concern can be reported to us, and we'll pass anything that might be abuse to the authorities right away.
What it costs
We expect students to set rates around $25–$45 per hour, which is well under most professional rates on our price page. These are planning estimates, not published data. Students set their own rates.
Students are independent. Parents choose, supervise and pay the student directly. We vet, introduce and keep the safety rules. This program is in planning and no student has been vetted yet.
